A remote that only works when you are standing beside the driver’s door is usually giving you fair warning: its battery is nearing the end of its life. Most car key batteries are inexpensive coin cells, but the key itself may contain a delicate circuit board, transponder chip and small retaining clips. How to replace a car key battery safely
Start by confirming that the battery is the likely problem. Common car key battery types include CR2032, CR2025, CR2016 and CR2450, although the correct fit varies by key design rather than simply by vehicle make or model. A CR2032 and CR2025 have the same diameter but different thicknesses, so substituting one for the other can cause poor contact or prevent the casing from closing correctly.
For best results, match the full battery code and use a quality branded lithium cell with the correct voltage. Check the expiry date if shown on the packet. A battery that has spent years in storage may be new but already have reduced service life.

What to do if the key still does not work
Changing a battery normally does not erase a key’s programming. In most cases, the remote should operate as soon as a fresh cell is installed. If it does not, begin with the simple checks: confirm the battery is the right type, seated fully and fitted the correct way around. Inspect the battery contacts for dirt, corrosion or a flattened spring contact.
If the remote works inconsistently, examine the casing and buttons. Worn rubber button pads, a loose circuit board or a cracked shell can prevent a switch from being pressed reliably. Rehousing the original electronics in a compatible replacement shell can be a practical repair where the board and transponder are still intact.
A vehicle may also have a separate issue, such as a weak vehicle battery, receiver fault or a key that has suffered water damage. If the remote locking fails but the vehicle starts normally with a traditional ignition key, that points towards the remote side of the fob.
